Hassayampa Justice Court
Like other justice courts in Arizona, Hassayampa is a limited jurisdiction court. The court handles minor offenses and traffic violations that occurred within the boundaries of the Hassayampa Justice Precinct (a map of the precinct is below). The boundaries are I-60 to the north, Bell Road to the south, Lake Pleasant Road to the east and Eagle Eye Road to the west.

The Hassayampa Justice Court is located at 14264 W. Tierra Buena Lane, Surprise, AZ 85374, located at the corner of University Street and Dobson Road. The building doesn’t look like a typical court from the outside because it was actually a converted bank. You will even see the areas that used to be teller windows when you drive into the parking lot. It is easily accessible by either the 101 or the 202 Freeways.

If a case is brought in the Hassayampa Justice Court but the crime did not occur within the boundaries identified above, then the court does not have jurisdiction to hear the case and the charges must be dismissed. Unfortunately, the charges can be refiled if the statute of limitations for the crime has not yet run out. However, it must be filed in the appropriate court that has jurisdiction over the case. What is a Justice Court?
Arizona has limited jurisdiction courts that are referred to as a “justice court.” Limited jurisdiction means that the court can only deal with misdemeanors crimes. If a case is charged as a felony, it must be handled by the Superior Court.
Justice courts also hear every type of civil and criminal traffic violation, as well as civil lawsuits (private lawsuits between individuals) where the amount in dispute is less than $10,000.
One of the interesting aspects of a justice court is that the judge is called a justice of the peace. Justices of the peace are elected positions and they are voted into their office for a four-year term. Shockingly, justice of the peace do not have to be lawyers to be elected. Many justices of the peace in Arizona are not, in fact lawyers, but they have the same powers as any other judge for a limited jurisdiction court in Arizona.

How Should I Dress to Attend the Hassayampa Justice Court?
If you are attending court, you should always dress professionally. This includes dress pants, a dress shirt and tie with a suit jacket for men, and a dress or pants with a dress shirt and jacket or cardigan. Things like leggings, shorts, jeans and sunglasses are not appropriate attire.
Keep in mind if you are directed to appear virtually, you are still expected to abide by the same rules regarding courtroom attire and decorum. Make sure that you are in a quiet location and are not driving or walking around during the hearing.
