What is a Justice Court?

Arizona has limited jurisdiction courts that are referred to as a “justice court.” Limited jurisdiction means that the court can only deal with misdemeanors crimes. If a case is charged as a felony, it must be handled by the Superior Court.

Justice courts also hear every type of civil and criminal traffic violation, as well as civil lawsuits (private lawsuits between individuals) where the amount in dispute is less than $10,000.

One of the interesting aspects of a justice court is that the judge is called a justice of the peace. Justices of the peace are elected positions and they are voted into their office for a four-year term. Shockingly, justice of the peace do not have to be lawyers to be elected. Many justices of the peace in Arizona are not, in fact lawyers, but they have the same powers as any other judge for a limited jurisdiction court in Arizona.

Justice of the Peace

The justice of the peace for Hassayampa Justice Court is Miles Keegan. Judge Keegan was elected the Justice of the Peace in 2014 and has served as judge since then. Judge Keegan served as the Constable for Hassayampa Precinct and served in the U.S. Army for nine years. He is not a licensed attorney and has not received the legal training that the prosecution is required to receive before becoming a prosecutor.
